Creating Leaders of Tomorrow
November, 2008
Dear Friends,
Greetings from Indus International School, Pune! Hope this Newsletter will give you an overview of the school programme, activities and achievements of our staff and students, during the month of October 2008.
DIWALI CELEBRATION
We celebrated Diwali on October 22-23, 2008. A Rangoli Competition was orgnaised for the students. During the assembly time, the students presented a meaningful Diwali skit, depicting the significance of the festival. The students extended a special invitation to the entire support staff to attend and also to be a part of the programme.
During the break, many of our students traveled to different parts of the country and overseas and returned with a lot of exposure. They were given an opportunity to share their experiences with their fellow students during assembly time. After the week-long Diwali Break, the school reopened on November 3, 2008 and the school programme was carried on as scheduled.
STUDENT - ENROLLMENTS
We are very happy, that many prospective parents are visiting the school and some of them have enrolled their children. At present, we have students and staff from twelve different countries and we are consciously trying to maintain diversity among the students and staff. As a school, we believe that it is imperative that an International School maintains and celebrates diversity. Therefore, we are proactively encouraging student-enrollment from various parts of the world. It is heartening, that there is a tremendous response for admissions amongst parents in Pune.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Professional Development of the staff is a vital area of our school life and growth and from November 14 – 16, 2008, seven of our staff members from various disciplines will be attending the IB Training Programme in Mumbai. We wish to ensure, that by the time we reopen the school in January 2009, after the Christmas Vacation, at least 70 % of our teaching staff attend various professional development training programmes.
On November 28-30, 2008, Principals of the three Indus Schools will meet in Bangalore for a two-day conference. The conference will highlight the programmes of the Indus Schools. The key-note address will be delivered by the Chairman of Indus Trust-Professor Shivram Malavalli and the CEO of Indus Trust-General Ray will address the Principals’ Conference, on the topic ‘How I learn to Lead?. This will also be a time for the Principals to reflect on the performance of their schools.
PARENT – TEACHER INTERACTION
The first Parents-Teacher meeting on October 10, 2008 was a great success and we have received positive feedback and helpful suggestions from the parents. We continue to give importance to parents’ involvement in the school and we are glad that parents visit us on a regular basis. As a school we encourage parents to actively participate in our school events and activities. It is our ardent desire to build a strong partnership with the parents, so that we know their aspirations and their concerns.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
As a part of our Community Service, some of our teachers have visited the nearby Angrewadi Village and have met the local Panchayat, to conduct a family survey. On November 5, 2008, a meeting was held in the school with the village Panchayat, to discuss how our school can be actively involved with the community. We desire to build a close-link with our immediate local community. We are overwhelmed by the response of the community leaders. I hope we will have a meaningful partnership to serve each other.
ACHIEVEMENT OF OUR MUSIC TEACHER, MR. JOSEPH SATRALKAR
It may interest you to know, that our Western Music teacher, Mr. Joesph Satralkar composed and dedicated a song for the President-Elect of the United States, Mr. Barack Obama. I am pleased to inform you, that song has been entitled by the President-Elect ‘Obama Victory Song’ and it has found place in Mr. Obama’s personal website. If you wish to listen to the song, please go to the following link - http://obama.azmaribet.com/ . On behalf of the school, I would like to congratulate Mr. Satralkar for his achievement.
EVENTS AND HOLIDAYS
On account of Gurunak Jayanti, the school will remain closed on November 13, 2008 and on November 14, 2008 we will celebrate Childrens’ Day. On that day, our dance teachers, Dr. Tonusree Dutta, Ms. Janki Desai and Ms. Sampada Lad will be performing for the students. The Indian classical music teacher Mr. Rais Khan and the Spanish teacher Mr. Pierluca Pineroli will begin the programme with a Morning Raga. We also have a Frisbee match between the students and staff, on that day and I hope that it will be an enjoyable experience.
